Maenam, meaning "Treasure-House of Medicines," lives up to its name with its rich biodiversity and medicinal flora. Nestled in South Sikkim near Ravangla, the Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary spans approximately 35 sq km and is revered by locals and monks for its spiritual and ecological significance. The sanctuary is home to various rare plants used in traditional medicine and is a paradise for birdwatchers, nature lovers, and trekking enthusiasts.

The 12 km trek starts from Ravangla and gradually ascends through dense forests, leading to the Bhaleydunga viewpoint and finally to the Maenam summit. Along the way, you’ll encounter ancient meditation caves, chirping birds, moss-laden trees, and panoramic clearings.

At the top, perched at 3,140 meters (10,300 ft), you'll find remnants of an old monastery still frequented by meditating Lamas. From here, enjoy breathtaking 360-degree views of the Eastern Himalayas, including Mt. Kanchendzonga, Mt. Rathong, the Kabru peaks, Mt. Pandim, Mt. Narsing, and more. You can even spot the hills of Kalimpong, Darjeeling and the scenic confluence of the Rangeet and Teesta Rivers at Melli.

Bhaleydhunga Ropeway Experience – A Scenic Alternative

For those seeking a more relaxed yet scenic adventure, the Bhaleydhunga Ropeway in Yangang, South Sikkim, offers a thrilling aerial route to the peak. One of the top five toughest ropeways in the world and the second toughest in Asia after China, it connects Dhapper to Bhaleydhunga Peak, rising to an altitude of 3,300 meters.

At the upper terminal, visitors can enjoy a 250-meter nature trail that winds through the verdant Maenam forests and leads to a glass skywalk with unmatched panoramic views of the Himalayan range.
