About the Location

Located about 23 km from Gangtok, Rumtek is famous because of Rumtek Monastery, which is the largest monastery in Sikkim. It is also the seat of the Karmapa Lama, the third highest monk in Tibetan Buddhism. It serves as one of the most important seats of the Kagyu (Black Hat) sect of Tibetan Buddhism outside of Tibet and is also known as Dharmachakra Centre.
At an elevation of almost 5000 ft and surrounded by lush green landscape, the monastery is a visual treat besides offering spiritual solace. The architectural design is almost identical to the original Kagyu headquarters in Tibet. The Kagyu (also called Kagyupa or Kagyud) school is one of six main schools of Tibetan Buddhism.Foreign nationals need to obtain a permit to visit the monastery and the permit can be obtained from the main government office at Sikkim and Siliguri.

How to Reach

The Retreat is 30 minutes by car from Gangtok and 8 minutes from Rumtek monastery.

Guests need to take the Rumtek-road that forks off National Highway just opposite Mayfair Hotel above the town of Ranipool.

It takes about 4.5 hours by car to reach this Retreat from the closest indian Airport (Bagdogra near Siliguri) and about 4 hours from the railway station, New Jalpaiguri near Siliguri.

Traditionally during the cold winter months country folks of Sikkim enjoy relaxing themselves in a nearby hot-spring or a traditional hot-stone-bath.
Sikkimese fill their wooden tub with fresh spring water. Meanwhile stones are heated in the fire. When the stones are hot they are added to the water. The stones release their heat and minerals to the spring-water. Various herbs or the bark of a certain tree is also added to the warm water for additional medicinal benefit. A traditional vegetable- or ‘Kowri’-soup is served during the bath.
