Not just the destination, but the travel itself can leave you spellbound. You have to climb almost 14000 feet above sea level in one of the most beautiful road trips ever – the zigzag Zuluk route. The road through Zuluk makes almost 32 hair pin turn to reach ‘Lungthung’. Gnathang valley is a piece of landscape cut right out of your favourite travel magazine or photograph
The sunrise views from Lungthung and Gyamochen which are just 5 kms from Nathang valley. The whole of Mt. Kanchenjungha range with all its peaks can be seen from here. The sun rises over Bhutan, washes the whole of Bhutan and parts of China with its early rays and reaches Mt. Kanchenjungha to turn it crimson. This is truly a heavenly experience.
From the Eagle’s nest you can see the longest view of the entire Eastern Himalayas, with Bhutan, China, the hills of Bengal including Darjeeling, the entire Mt. Kanchenjungha range and River Bramhaputra meandering across China and entering India. You need to trek uphill from Gnathang valley for about 20 minutes to reach the Eagle’s Nest Bunker. This is an abandoned Bunker of the army located strategically on a hill top with a 360 degree complete view of the Himalayas. One can still see the bullet marks in the bunker walls, which bears the testimony of the Indo-China war.
Nnathang homestay is the best accommodation available in this scenic valley. It is run by a local family with simple, clean accommodation and sumptuous home cooked meals which keep you warm in the cold weather.
About the Location
A high altitude valley situated in the eastern frontier of Sikkim bordering Bhutan and China, Nathang is one of the remotest Tibetan habitations in the Himalayas. Nathang Valley usually remains covered with thick snow from January to April. The long 4 month sub-zero temperature makes the valley a cold desert and one of the most beautiful parts of the Himalayas. Located at an altitude of 13,500 ft. means the vegetation and landscape switches from deeps snow cover in winter and early spring to lush green meadow in summer. The approach to the region will either mean entering via the highly popular Tsangu lake route or the picturesque looping roads of Dzuluk. Either ways Nathang valley is a must visit for those seeking to explore beyond the run of the mill tourist destinations.
