Best Places to Visit in and Around Ravangla

1. Buddha Park – Tathagata Tsal

The Buddha Park, also known as Tathagata Tsal, is Ravangla's most recognisable landmark.

Located at the base of Maenam Hill, the park was developed between 2006 and 2013 and is centred around a 130-foot-high statue of Buddha. The statue was consecrated on 25 March 2013 by the 14th Dalai Lama.

The park forms part of Sikkim's wider Buddhist circuit and combines landscaped gardens, walking paths, views of the surrounding mountains and Buddhist architecture.

It is worth visiting early in the morning when the surroundings are generally quieter and the mountain views are often clearer.

2. Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary

For nature lovers and trekkers, Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary is arguably one of Ravangla's most important attractions.

The sanctuary covers approximately 35 sq km above Ravangla and extends from subtropical forests into temperate and higher-altitude vegetation. Maenam Peak, at approximately 3,263 metres, lies within the sanctuary.

The forests are home to a variety of wildlife and birds, including species such as the red panda, leopard cat, civet and blood pheasant, although sightings of wildlife are naturally unpredictable.

For birdwatchers, the forests can be particularly rewarding. The Sikkim government lists species including the Satyr tragopan, Kalij pheasant, rusty-bellied shortwing, minivets, yuhinas and flycatchers among the birds found around the Maenam trek.

3. Trek to Maenam Peak

The trek to Maenam Peak is one of the major adventure experiences around Ravangla.

The trail climbs through the forests of Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary and eventually reaches the high point of Maenam. The government of Sikkim lists the Rabong–Maenam–Bhaley Dhunga route among the state's recognised trekking routes.

From higher sections of the trail, trekkers can experience spectacular mountain views when the weather is clear.

The trek is best undertaken with appropriate local guidance and preparation, particularly because weather conditions in the mountains can change quickly.

A further trek from Maenam leads towards Bhaley Dhunga, a distinctive cockscomb-shaped rock formation. The government tourism department describes the route from Ravangla to Maenam as approximately 12 km, with a further kilometre leading towards Bhaley Dhunga.

4. Ralong Monastery

Located a short drive from Ravangla, Ralong Monastery is an important Buddhist site in South Sikkim.

The Karma Rabdenling Goenpa at Ralong is described by the Namchi district administration as the oldest Karma Kagyu goenpa in Sikkim.

The monastery is surrounded by forests and mountains and offers a much quieter experience than some of Sikkim's more prominent monasteries.

A visit to Ralong can easily be combined with a trip to Ralong Hot Springs.

5. Ralong Hot Springs

The Ralong area is also known for its natural hot springs.

These springs have traditionally been visited by locals and pilgrims and form part of the cultural landscape around Ralong.

If you are interested in exploring beyond the main Ravangla tourist circuit, combining Ralong Monastery and Ralong Hot Springs makes for an interesting half-day excursion. Please note that Ralong Hot Springs is open only during winter season. 

6. Kewzing Village

If you want to experience rural Sikkim, make time for Kewzing.

The village landscape around Kewzing offers a glimpse into traditional Sikkimese life, with homes surrounded by forests, farms and mountain views.

Instead of simply visiting Kewzing as a sightseeing stop, consider staying in a village homestay and spending a little more time here.

The weather in Ravangla can be as unpredictable as a teenager, surprising visitors with sudden rain showers - Rabong literally means “Wet Sheep” in the local language. To avoid the monsoon downpours, it is advisable to plan a visit during the autumn months from September to December when the weather is tranquil and giving (best night sky views). Summer months from April to June is also a good time to visit Ravangla as the temperature is cool and comfortable.

How to reach Ravangla?

Ravangla is readily accessible from both airports and railway stations. The closest airport is Bagdogra airport, situated 124 km away, while the nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri, approximately 119 km away. Additionally, Ravangla boasts excellent road connectivity to prominent towns and cities in Sikkim and neighboring West Bengal, such as Gangtok, Pelling, Namchi, and Darjeeling.

How far is Ravangla from Gangtok?

Ravangla is approximately 65 km from Gangtok by road, and the journey usually takes around 3 hours by car, depending on the route, traffic and road conditions.

The drive takes you through the scenic mountain landscapes of South Sikkim, making Ravangla an easy addition to a Gangtok–Ravangla–Pelling itinerary.
