About The Experience

Overview: Tendong Hill, situated above Damthang and overlooking Namchi, has become one of the most iconic landmarks in South Sikkim. Accessible only via a trek starting from Damthang, which is a 13 km drive from Ravangla, the trek covers a distance of around 6 km through lush green forests teeming with vibrant flora and wildlife. The forest is home to over 90 species of birds, as well as Himalayan Bears, leopards, and the elusive Red Panda. The summit, located at an altitude of 8,660 feet, offers breathtaking views of the entire Eastern Himalayas.

Historical background: Historically, Tendong Hill has been a place of solitude for Buddhist Lamas who spent years meditating in its serene and majestic surroundings. According to Lepcha folklore, the name "Tendong," meaning "Upraised Horn," is tied to a myth in which the hill saved the Lepcha people from a great flood that submerged the world. This legend closely mirrors the story of Noah's Ark, with Tendong Hill acting as the savior. The hill remains a sacred site, with Lepchas continuing to honor it during the Lho Rum Faat festival.

What to expect: At the summit, you'll find a small monastery and a three-story watchtower. From the watchtower, you can enjoy a stunning 360-degree view of the region. No other spot in Sikkim offers such a panoramic vista, with sights that include the Singalila range to the west, the Chola range to the east, parts of Gangtok town, Nathu La, Darjeeling, and even the plains of West Bengal.
