About The Experience

Umden, The Eri Silk Village of NE India, is a small village located in Ri-Bhoi district in Meghalaya. Take a cultural tour through the community and experience the lush greenery amidst the whistling sounds of the village’s feathered friends.  Umden-Diwon is popularly known for its weaving culture specialised in cultural and traditional weaving and production of silk and silk products, locally known as “RYNDIA”, using the nature based products like the colours for the fabrics from natural resource like plants, vegetables etc. The village takes pride in continuing the age old tradition of producing silk following the unique method of not killing the silk worm during the process of extracting silk from the cocoons. It’s called the ‘ahimsa’ tradition of sericulture. Here one can witness all the steps in the sericulture value chain- starting from rearing of silk worms to spinning and reeling of silk to yarn production and dying and finally to weaving.  Home to indigeneous communities, Umden-Diwon also boasts of a sacred grove which is home to a hundred of tree varieties, monoliths and other plant species. Upon request, the community members can also organise a cultural show for visitors while they enjoy a meal at the Traveller’s Nest. Visitors can also spare a few hours to pick their choice of local/indigeneous vegetables from the Nest’s kitchen garden and take a small bite while watching the chefs prep their food.
