Experience one of Meghalaya's most unusual hiking trails as you make your way through Wahkhen Village to Mawryngkhang, the legendary "King of the Rocks." The trail takes you along bamboo bridges, ladders and walkways constructed against dramatic rock faces, with spectacular views of the surrounding green valleys and the Umrew River below.

Unlike a conventional mountain trek, the Mawryngkhang Bamboo Trek is as much about the trail itself as the destination. Sections of the route take you across bamboo walkways perched alongside steep rock faces, making for an exciting and occasionally vertigo-inducing experience.

At the end of the trail stands the massive Mawryngkhang rock, associated with a popular Khasi legend of love, rivalry and a battle between giant rocks. The dramatic landscape and the unusual bamboo construction make this one of the most memorable day hikes around Shillong.

What to Expect:

The trek begins in Wahkhen Village, around 48 km from Shillong, with the drive taking approximately two hours. From the village, the trail gradually descends and climbs through forested terrain before reaching the bamboo bridges and cliffside sections leading towards Mawryngkhang.

Along the way, you will encounter:

• Bamboo bridges and ladders built along the cliffs
• Views of the Umrew River and surrounding valleys
• Dense greenery and forest
• Small waterfalls and streams, particularly during the wetter months
• Dramatic rock formations
• The Mawryngkhang rock, or “King of the Rocks”
• Panoramic views across the East Khasi Hills

The 6.5 km round trip generally takes around 5–6 hours, depending on pace and trail conditions.

The Bamboo Trail

The bamboo structures are the highlight of the experience. Built and maintained by the local community, they allow trekkers to negotiate sections of steep terrain that would otherwise be difficult to access.

The trail includes bamboo bridges and ladders attached to or positioned alongside the rock faces. The village council regularly maintains the route, but visitors should still exercise caution, particularly after rain.

If you are uncomfortable with heights, some sections of the trek may be challenging.

About Wahkhen

Wahkhen itself is worth spending some time exploring. The village is known not only as the gateway to Mawryngkhang but also for its Khasi musical heritage.

The village is home to the Sieng Riti Institute, where young musicians learn traditional Khasi instruments. Meghalaya Tourism describes Wahkhen as a village where trekking, traditional music and Khasi culture come together.

If time permits, consider staying overnight in Wahkhen rather than returning immediately to Shillong.

Best Time to Visit

The best period for the Mawryngkhang Bamboo Trek is generally October to April, when the weather is more suitable for hiking and the trail is less slippery. Meghalaya Tourism recommends this period for the trek.

The trail can be particularly slippery during the monsoon, so visitors should exercise additional caution during periods of heavy rain.

How to Reach Wahkhen

Wahkhen is approximately 48 km from Shillong and takes around 2 hours by car. The most convenient option is to hire a private taxi from Shillong and start early in the morning. Meghalaya Tourism recommends starting around 7 AM to allow sufficient time for the trek.

A local guide can also be arranged and is useful for navigation and understanding the local landscape and culture.

• Rain jacket
• Small backpack
• Basic first-aid kit
• Cash for local expenses
• Extra clothing during the rainy season

There are limited facilities along the trail, so carry everything you need for the hike.
