How to choose the best place to stay in Kaziranga:

A safari in Kaziranga National Park is not quite like staying at a conventional holiday destination where you can pick any hotel in the area and reach your sightseeing spots in a few minutes. Kaziranga is spread across a large landscape, with four principal tourism ranges — Kohora (Central), Bagori (Western), Agoratoli (Eastern) and Burapahar. Each range has its own entrance, landscape and wildlife experience. All four ranges offer jeep safaris, while elephant safaris are currently concentrated in the Central and Western ranges.

 WEST ← Bagori | Kohora | Agoratoli → EAST

This makes the location of your accommodation surprisingly important.

If you are staying near Kohora and have a morning safari in Agoratoli, for example, you will need to make an early road transfer to the eastern side of the park. Conversely, if you stay near Agoratoli because you want to be close to the Eastern Range, travelling back to Kohora for an early safari adds another journey to your morning.

And when your safari starts around sunrise, an extra 30–60 minutes on the road can make a big difference.

So rather than asking simply, "Which is the best resort in Kaziranga?", a better question is:

Which safari ranges do you want to explore, and where should you stay to make those safaris convenient?

1. Staying in Kohora – The Most Convenient Base for a First Visit

Iora The Retreat
Iora The Retreat, Kaziranga

If this is your first trip to Kaziranga, staying around Kohora is the Most Convenient Base for a first visit.

Kohora is the Central Range and has the largest concentration of accommodation. The Forest Department's accommodation list includes several properties here, while private options range from budget lodges to luxury resorts.

One prominent example is IORA – The Retreat, located at Bogorijuri, Kohora.

Other accommodation options around Kohora include:

  • Aranya Tourist Lodge
  •
  • Red River Retreat
  • Kodom Bari Retreat, Kaziranga
  • Nature Hunt Eco Camp Kaziranga
Why choose Kohora?

The biggest advantage is flexibility.

From Kohora, you can arrange safaris in the Central Range and use it as your base for visiting other ranges during your stay. There is also a much wider choice of restaurants, shops, transport and accommodation.

It is particularly convenient if your itinerary includes:

  • Central Range jeep safari
  • Central Range elephant safari
  • Western Range safari
  • Eastern Range safari
  • Kaziranga Orchid and Biodiversity Park
  • Tea garden visits
  • Local village and cultural experiences
The downside

Kohora is also the busiest and most developed tourism hub in Kaziranga.

If your priority is a quiet, deeply immersive wildlife experience, you may prefer staying closer to one of the less-developed ranges.

2. Staying Near Bagori – Ideal for the Western Range and Elephant Safari

The Bagori Range, also known as the Western Range, lies west of Kohora and is one of Kaziranga's most popular safari areas.

It is particularly important when planning an early morning elephant safari, because elephant safaris are currently conducted in the Central and Western ranges.

This is where accommodation location becomes particularly useful.

The Assam Forest Department lists several properties around Bagori, including Bonraja Motel, Diphlu River Lodge near the Bagori Police Outpost and United-21 Grassland Resort in Harmoti, Bagori Range.

  • Green Paradise Hotel and Resort
  • Bagori Lodge & Resort

The current Bagori Lodge & Resort information specifically describes the property as being near National Highway 37 and the Western Range, and offers assistance with jeep and elephant safaris.

Why stay near Bagori?

If you have an early morning elephant safari at Bagori, staying close to the range can make your morning considerably easier.

Instead of waking up very early and driving from Kohora to Bagori, you can start your day close to the safari gate.

This is particularly useful for families, older travellers and anyone who does not want to start the day with a long transfer before a safari.

Who should stay here?

Bagori is particularly worth considering if:

  • Your itinerary includes an elephant safari
  • You want to do a Western Range jeep safari
  • Wildlife photography is a priority
  • You prefer to stay away from the busiest Kohora hub
  • You are staying for only 1–2 nights and want to focus on the Western Range

3. Staying at Agoratoli – For the Eastern Range and Birdwatchers

At the opposite end of the tourism spectrum is Agoratoli, the Eastern Range.

This is a particularly interesting area for birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts looking for a quieter safari experience. The eastern part of Kaziranga contains extensive wetlands and water bodies and is known for its birdlife.

The accommodation situation here is quite different from Kohora.

There are fewer hotels and resorts, but there is one major advantage: you can stay very close to the Eastern Range entrance.

The Assam Forest Department specifically lists:

Agoratoli Eco Tourism Resort

The property is listed by the Forest Department as being opposite the Agoratoli Range Office.

Another property, Agoratoli Resort, is also a good option, within walking distance of the Eastern Range entrance and forest office.

Why stay near Agoratoli?

If your priority is an Eastern Range safari, this location has an obvious logistical advantage.

You can wake up, have breakfast or an early cup of tea and reach the safari gate without making a long transfer from Kohora.

Agoratoli is also particularly attractive for:

  • Birdwatchers
  • Wildlife photographers
  • Travellers looking for quieter surroundings
  • Repeat visitors to Kaziranga
  • Travellers interested in wetlands and eastern Kaziranga
The trade-off

This is where the choice becomes important.

If you stay in Agoratoli and want to do a Kohora or Bagori safari the next morning, you have to travel considerably farther.

One guests have noted the convenience of being close to the Eastern Range while also pointing out that the Central and Western ranges are considerably farther away.

So Agoratoli can be an excellent choice if the Eastern Range is central to your itinerary, but it may be less convenient as a base for visiting every range.

4. Staying Near Burapahar – For a More Offbeat Kaziranga Experience

The fourth tourism range is Burapahar, around Ghorakati.

It is somewhat different from the other three ranges, with more forested and hilly terrain and a quieter character.

Jeep safaris operate in Burapahar, and current tourism information also identifies walking/trekking experiences associated with the range.

This makes Burapahar interesting for travellers who have already experienced the more conventional Kaziranga safari circuit and want something different.

Accommodation options immediately around Burapahar are more limited than around Kohora.

The Assam Forest Department's accommodation information lists GL Resort, Burapahar, while several other properties are situated farther along the western side of the park.

Who should consider Burapahar?

Stay around Burapahar if you are particularly interested in:

  • A quieter safari
  • Forest and hill landscapes
  • Birdwatching
  • Walking/trekking experiences
  • Exploring a less frequently visited part of Kaziranga

For a conventional first-time Kaziranga trip focused on rhinos and multiple safari ranges, Kohora generally provides more accommodation flexibility.

Kaziranga Safari Timings: What You Need to Know

This is the part that makes location so important.

Safari timings can change according to season, weather and Forest Department decisions, so travellers should confirm the exact reporting and entry time for their booking.

Current tourism information generally places jeep safaris in two daily sessions:

Safari

Morning

Afternoon

Kohora

Around 7:30 AM onwards

Around 1:30 PM onwards

Bagori

Around 7:30 AM onwards

Around 1:30 PM onwards

Agoratoli

Around 7:30 AM onwards

Around 1:30 PM onwards

Burapahar

Around 7:30 AM onwards

Around 1:30 PM onwards

Safari timings vary by season and are subject to Forest Department regulations, weather and operational conditions. As a broad guide, jeep safaris generally operate in morning and afternoon sessions, with morning departures typically beginning around 7:00–7:30 AM and afternoon departures around 1:30 PM. Always confirm the exact reporting time when booking your safari.

The important point is that all four ranges offer jeep safaris.

What About Elephant Safaris?

This is where the four ranges are very different.

Elephant safaris are not available across all four ranges.

Current information identifies:

  • Kohora/Central – Elephant Safari
  • Bagori/Western – Elephant Safari
  • Agoratoli/Eastern – No elephant safari
  • Burapahar – No elephant safari

Elephant safaris operate in the early morning, with current published schedules generally showing slots beginning around 5:00–6:00 AM and 6:00–7:00 AM, although the exact schedule can change.

This has a very practical implication.

If your elephant safari is at Bagori...

Staying at a Bagori-area property makes a lot of sense.

You avoid an unnecessarily early transfer from Kohora.

Similarly, if your elephant safari is at Kohora, staying around Kohora makes the morning considerably easier.

Why Your Safari Range Should Influence Your Accommodation

Imagine two travellers.

Traveller A

Stays at a resort in Kohora and has a 7:30 AM safari at Kohora.

They can wake up, have a quick breakfast and reach the safari gate without a long transfer.

Traveller B

Stays in Kohora but has a morning safari at Agoratoli.

They now have to leave much earlier to account for the road journey to the eastern entrance.

The reverse is equally true.

A traveller staying at Agoratoli for an early Eastern Range safari has an enormous convenience advantage, but if their next morning's safari is at Bagori, they have created another long transfer.

This is why there isn't necessarily one "best" area to stay in Kaziranga.

The best location depends on your safari plan.

So Where Should You Stay in Kaziranga?

If this is your first visit we recommend staying around Kohora.

It provides the largest choice of accommodation and is the most practical central base for combining different activities.

If you specifically want an elephant safari at Bagori - consider staying near Bagori.

It eliminates an unnecessary early morning transfer.

If birdwatching is your priority - consider Agoratoli.

The Eastern Range is particularly interesting for wetlands and birdlife, and staying near the range gives you immediate access to the safari gate.

If you want a quieter, more offbeat experience - consider Burapahar.

The landscape and experiences are different from the busier central tourism circuit.

Should You Change Hotels During Your Kaziranga Trip?

For a 2-night stay, I would generally keep things simple and stay in one location unless a particular safari makes the logistics worthwhile.

For a 3-night or 4-night wildlife-focused trip, however, splitting your stay can make sense.

For example:

Option 1 – Convenient First Visit

3 nights Kohora

  • Day 1: Arrive and relax
  • Day 2: Kohora safari + local experience
  • Day 3: Bagori or Agoratoli safari
  • Day 4: Depart

This is the easiest option.

Option 2 – Wildlife-Focused

2 nights Kohora + 1 night Agoratoli

This allows you to experience the Central Range while also giving you an early start for an Eastern Range safari.

Option 3 – Elephant Safari Focus

2 nights Bagori + 1 night Kohora

This can work particularly well if the Bagori elephant safari is one of the highlights of your trip.

Our Recommendation: Plan the Safari First, Then Choose the Hotel

When planning Kaziranga, many travellers make the mistake of choosing the resort first and the safari later.

We recommend doing it the other way around.

First decide:

  1. Which ranges do you want to visit?
  2. Do you want an elephant safari?
  3. Is birdwatching important to you?
  4. How many mornings do you have?
  5. Are you travelling with children or older family members?
  6. Are you willing to change hotels during the trip?

Then choose your accommodation accordingly.

For most first-time visitors, Kohora is the easiest all-round base because of its central location and large concentration of accommodation. But if your itinerary is specifically focused on Bagori's elephant safari or Agoratoli's bird-rich Eastern Range, staying close to that particular range can save you a very early morning drive.

And that is perhaps the most important thing to remember about accommodation in Kaziranga:

Don't just book the best-looking resort. Book the right resort for the safari you want to do.

One correction to keep in mind - I would not describe Kohora as necessarily "the best" range, or Bagori/Agoratoli as better or worse. The Forest Department itself notes that the four ranges have different landscapes and wildlife experiences. The useful distinction for this article is convenience and the type of experience, not ranking the ranges.
