Where is Okhrey?

Okhrey is a peaceful Himalayan hamlet in Sikkim, close to the India–Nepal border, and serves as the base for visiting the sanctuary. The trek begins from Hilley, about 9–10 km from Okhrey.

Travelling to Okhrey: Distance & Travel Time

From Siliguri:

Okhrey is roughly 130–140 km from Siliguri, West Bengal. Depending on the season and road conditions, the drive can take about 5–6 hours via Teesta ,Jorethang, Sombaria and Okhrey. There aren’t many direct public transport options, so most travelers either hire a private cab or take shared vehicles from Payel Cinema, Siliguri to Jorethang and then to Okhrey.

From Gangtok:

If you’re coming from Gangtok, the journey to Okhrey is longer — about 170 km and around 4–5 hours by road. Shared cabs and taxis are available from Gangtok but need to be coordinated in advance.

The trek to the sanctuary starts from Hilley village, which is a further 9–10 km from Okhrey. Locals usually hire a cab or jeep to reach Hilley (20–30 min), as there’s no regular public transport on this stretch.

Trail Details

The hike starts from Hilley village and winds 5 km through dense pine forests. It is a moderate trail that suits casual hikers as well as seasoned nature lovers. Expect to spend around 2 to 4 hours (round-trip) on the trail depending on your pace and breaks.

Terrain & Path

  • The terrain is basically a well maintained stonelaid  forest track with gentle undulations
  • You will come across sections of pine, oak, magnolia, and rhododendron forest
  • There are a few wooden and bamboo bridges over small streams
  • The trail is well-defined and GPS or guide not essential, but local guidance enriches the experience.
  • The trail is generally considered easy to moderate. Beginners with reasonable fitness will find it enjoyable.

What You’ll See:

Rhododendrons Everywhere

During peak bloom March–May, the sanctuary explodes into a riot of colors with rhododendrons in red, pink, white, and purple hues. There are over a dozen species growing here, with varieties like arboreum, falconeri, barbatum and more adding vibrancy to the forest.

Flora & Fauna

Apart from rhododendrons, you’ll walk through sections rich in:

  • Pine, oak, primulas, magnolias
  • Birds like the blue whistling thrush, grey bushchat, parrotbill, rufous sibia and other Himalayan species can be spotted during your hike.
  • With luck, even glimpses of elusive wildlife such as red pandas or Himalayan black bears though rare can be sighted.

Views

On clear days, the Kanchenjunga range looms majestically from the sanctuary; a sunrise or sunset view is especially magical amidst the blooms.

Entry Tickets & Permits for Entering Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary

A nominal entry fee of ₹50 is charged at the sanctuary gate.

Camera charges may be extra.

The best time is to generally follow the daylight hours and arrive at Hilley early by 8 or 9 am so that you complete the hike comfortably and catch the best light on the trail.

For those who want to soak in the forest atmosphere beyond a day hike, the base camp at the sanctuary offers simple but memorable stay options. Managed by the forest department, visitors can choose between basic dormitory accommodation and seasonal tented stays set amidst dense rhododendron and conifer forests. The dorms are a no-frills option with shared rooms with mattresses, blankets, and common washrooms. But the experience of spending a night inside Royal Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary is truly special, especially during bloom season. Tents are usually arranged during peak months (March–May) and are ideal for trekkers who want an immersive, close-to-nature experience. Availability is limited and bookings are best arranged through local operators or in advance.

At the sanctuary entry gate in Hilley, there are small local eateries and forest-run kitchens serving hot, freshly prepared meals which is a welcome break after the uphill walk. One can order lunch on your way up and have it once your hike is over. The food is simple, filling, and reasonably priced, making it perfect for trekkers after the return hike. Don’t expect fancy menus but the warmth, both literal and emotional, adds beautifully to the overall experience.
