It was on the 22nd of January 1970 that the tea estate of Limbuguri was taken over by the present management from the Eastern Assam Tea Company, an erstwhile sterling company located in, St. Helen's Place, Bishopgate, London. Eastern Assam Tea Company is said to have bought this garden in the late 1930's from a company called the Limbuguri Tea Company Ltd.

Over the last hundred years or more, the garden undoubtedly changed several hands but what remained constant were the beautifully architectured colonial tea bungalows in the estate. The Eastern Assam Tea Company handed over three bungalows, one of which is known as "Wathai Tea Heritage Bungalow" at present. The Wathai bungalow derives its name from a local village within the estate and was originally built to serve as the tea garden manager's residence, as was the common practice in all colonial era estates. The bungalow, being more than a hundred years old, serves as nothing short of a muted historian, silently conveying through its simple architecture, design, flooring and age old furniture, innumerable stories of the various eras the garden has seen.

The tea garden skirts the banks of the Dibru River, and is a hop away from what is known as the birder's paradise and home to the endangered Parrot Bill, the Dibru Saikhowa National Park. So, from anyone who is a wildlife or a bird enthusiast to a tea lover, this bungalow is the perfect halting place. And if you are one of them, then you should book your room here on your Bird and wildlife watching tour in Assam to get the best travelling experience.

The Wathai bungalow is almost like a treasured possession being passed on for decades from one manager to the next, withstanding more than a hundred years of weathering and is set amidst an unending undulated expanse of green tea bushes. This simple yet historic heritage bungalow continues to be a luxurious and a welcoming space for anyone who wishes to experience a stay in the tea estate.
