Kargil War Memorial: Also known as the Drass War Memorial, this site commemorates the soldiers who lost their lives in the Kargil War of 1999. It features a pink sandstone wall engraved with the names of the fallen soldiers and is located near Drass, providing views of key battlegrounds like Tololing Heights and Tiger Hill.
Phuktal Monastery: Nestled in the Zanskar Valley, this stunning monastery is built into a cliff and is known for its spiritual ambiance and beautiful surroundings. It is accessible via a trek and offers a unique glimpse into Buddhist culture.

Dress Appropriately: Kargil experiences a cool climate, so it's advisable to wear warm layers, even in summer. During winter, temperatures can drop significantly, reaching as low as -45°C.
Acclimatization: Due to its high altitude (approximately 2,676 meters), visitors should acclimatize before engaging in strenuous activities like trekking or rafting. Staying hydrated and avoiding alcohol is recommended to prevent altitude sickness.
Cultural Sensitivity: Respect Local Customs: Kargil has a rich cultural heritage, primarily influenced by Shia Islam. Visitors should dress modestly and be mindful of local traditions, especially when visiting temples and monasteries where shoes should be removed.

Is it safe to visit Kargil?

Despite it's historical significance, Kargil is now a peaceful destination, making it safe for tourists. The town has a military airfield and is well-connected by road to Leh and other parts of Ladakh, allowing for easy access to its attractions

Where to stay in Kargil?

Tololing Eco Resort is a very picturesque retreat in Kargil offering a unique blend of comfort and eco-friendly living. The resort has tastefully furnished cottages, offering a perfect blend of modern amenities and a cozy ambiance. Food choices are vegetarian and mostly limited. But, that's understandable given we are at 10,000 feet plus above MSL. The war memorial is just 2 to 3 minutes walk from the resort. 

Best time to visit Kargil?

April to September is the best time to visit Kargil. The winter months are best avoided as the temperature drops to as low as 25 degree Celsius below zero at the peak of winter
 

Kargil has a long and fascinating history with various dynasties and as a hub for trans-continental Silk Route trade that linked Central Asia, the Indian subcontinent and the world beyond. It's history is still evident in the forts and palaces that dot its landscape, ancient rock carvings and petroglyphs, and rich diversity of linguistic, social, religious and ethnic communities found in Kargil today.
