This Hidden Paradise is a beautiful, secluded resort located in ‘Gyathang’, a village in lower Dzongu at an altitude of 5100 ft. The experience to this hidden paradise actually begins with a 4 km off the road ride to the resort, which is an experience straight out of National Geographic. The property is constructed of materials all locally sourced with a minimal environmental footprint. This is a location far from the maddening crowd, where you are yourself amidst the grandeur of nature.Truly a blessing for those who make it up to this hidden paradise.

The rooms are special and offer total privacy. Decor is a cosy, rustic log-cabin theme with delightful local details (like modern shower stalls with river pebbles or a tree branch towel rack). The Riverside picnic is a complete experience by itself. There is so much one can do here or one can just sit on the porch and watch the mist in the valley.

About the Location

Dzongu, the special Lepcha reserve, lies in the North District of Sikkim amidst deep valleys and lush forests of the himalayas. An almost virgin territory with a scanty population of Sikkim’s native inhabitants, it is a beautiful land of dense jungle groves and pristine glacial streams. There are numerous waterfalls cascading down steep cliffs and natural hot springs bubbling at the various creeks and caves. The area is remote yet easily accessed from the capital city of Gangtok. Elevation ranges from1400 ft. to almost 20,000 ft higher up, and this has given way to an amazing diversity of plants and wildlife. It borders the Khangchendzonga National Park and Biosphere Reserve offering panoramic views of Mount Khangchendzonga (8,585m), the third highest summit in the world and the protective deity of Sikkim.

The People:

Home to the Lepchas, the original inhabitants of Sikkim, Dzongu was designated a special reserve for the Lepcha community since the 1960’s when Sikkim was still a kingdom under Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal. This is the last bastion of the Lepchas in Sikkim and possibly one of the few places where one could meet the local shamans referred to locally as the ‘boongthing’ who still practice the ancient animistic rituals. Sadly, this culture is fast disappearing with other more popular religions like Christianity and Buddhism taking over as the dominant religion.

How to Reach

The closest rail network/ Airport is approximately 150 kilometers located at Siliguri, West Bengal. The Property being located in protected reserve means that a ‘Protected area permit’ will have to be applied beforehand for entry. Our guests will of course be taken care of all these formalities. There are daily shares taxis that ply between Dzongu and the capital city of Gangtok, however it is more advisable to take a chartered taxi for ease of travel.
