Kalimpong is an east Indian hill town in the Himalayan foothills of West Bengal. Perched on a ridge above the Teesta River, it’s home to colonial-era buildings like MacFarlane Memorial Church, named after a Scottish missionary. South, the hilltop Durpin Monastery, or Zang Dhok Palri Phodang, contains sacred Buddhist scriptures. Deolo Park has landscaped gardens and offers views of the town and surrounding hills.

Kalimpong Travel Tips

It is famous for its flower market, especially the wide array of orchids. Other attractions include Buddhist monasteries including the Zang Dhok Palri Phodang - known for its rare Tibetan Buddhist scriptures, churches, an excellent private library for the study of Tibetan and Himalayan language and culture. Kalimpong is home to Karmapa Trinley Thaye Dorje - 17th Karmapa.

Kalimpong is also known for its traditional handicrafts.Although not many travellers bother to visit Kalimpong, there's enough here to keep you occupied for a couple of days, and for the energetic there's some good trekking and river-rafting in the river Teesta.

Flight By Air

The nearest airport to Kalimpong is Bagdogra in Siliguri. All major domestic airlines from various Indian cities offer good connectivity between Bagdogra and rest of India. Direct flights to Bagdogra are available from Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati. The estimated distance from Bagdogra to Kalimpong is 75 km which is about two hours and a half journey.

Kalimpong does not have its own railway station and the nearest railhead is New Jalpaiguri Station. This is a very important railway station of North Bengal and direct trains from Kolkata, Delhi and New Jalpaiguri. The estimated distance from NJP to Kalimpong is 70 km which is about two hours journey.

Car
Car By Road

Kalimpong is well connected by road with Kolkata, Siliguri, Gangtok and Darjeeling. Regular buses from Darjeeling, Gangtok and Siliguri ply to Kalimpong. The road distances from Kolkata, Siliguri, Gangtok and Darjeeling are 625 Kms, 65 kms, 75 kms and 51 kms, respectively.
