Situated between 3,500-4000ft, Mungpo is well known for its cinchona and medicinal plant cultivation. Mungpoo has a bazaar called Reshep, a bungalow and a rest house under the control of the cinchona Directorate. It is a small mountain village located roughly at 31 Km from Darjeeling, West Bengal. Part of Sittong-III, this small village is infested with colourful flower nurseries, tea gardens, lively, gurgling mountain-streams and a series of cinchona plantations.
The Government Quinine Factory in Mungpoo demonstrates quinine extraction from cinchona . The adjoining garden to this factory is full of medicinal plants and shrubs including cinchona too. There is no entry fee for this place and you can explore at your will the series of plantations and shrubs while also taking in the beauty of the green, mountainous valleys, meadows and orchid blooms all around in Mungpoo. The Dinchhen Sherap Chhaeling Gumha, a monastery near the main market at Mungpoo is another attraction, as also is the orchid center at a distance of 5 Km from the market. On your sightseeing trip you can also include the Kalijhora waterfall and Mungpoo view point, and the prestigious, historically enriched Ravindra Bhavan which was the Poet-Laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s Mungpoo settlement.
