North Sikkim Road Condition & Permit Update – April 2026

After three months of being closed due to heavy rainfall and multiple landslides, both Lachen and Lachung has officially reopened to tourists starting March 8, 2026. The Sikkim government, in coordination with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), has restored road connectivity up to Lachen. Road from Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake is also accessbile creating fresh opportunities for travelers to once again experience the breathtaking beauty of this Himalayan region.

The Tourism Department, Government of Sikkim has announced revised travel regulations for North Sikkim following difficult terrain conditions and safety concerns.

Key Updates on North Sikkim Tourism

Sangkhalaing Bridge Completed: The newly constructed bridge at Dzongu has created a stable route to Chungthang and beyond, saving nearly 1.5 hours of travel time compared to the earlier Pihidang route.

Permits Available: Inner line permits for North Sikkim are being issued

Open Destinations: Currently all destinations including Lachen, Gurudongmar Lake, Lachung and Yumthang Valley (up to Zero Point/Yumesamdong) are open for visitors.

Lachen & Gurudongmar Lake: Lachen road access remains closed since 5th April 2026 due to road damage ahead of Taram Chu bridge (between Chungthang and Lachen). We are hoping that the road will open sometime during May 2026

Advisory to Tourists, Drivers & Operators

  • Avoid travel after sunset due to difficult terrain and safety risks.
  • Hire only experienced local drivers familiar with the North Sikkim route.
  • Book tours only through registered Sikkim travel operators (OurGuest Travels from Sikkim got the best travel operator Sikkim in 2024)
  • In case of emergencies, tourists and drivers must follow instructions of the District Administration.
  • Avoid pressurizing drivers regarding timings.
  • Strictly follow road and permit regulations.

Road clearance efforts are ongoing, and BRO/GREF personnel are stationed with machinery to address blockages.

Recently during the 1st week of March 2026, Taram Chu bridge construction got compeleted and since 8th March 2026 tourist permits are being given so that vehciles can pass through. But again on 5th April there was road damage and due to this road acess to Lachen remains blocked as of 15th April 2026

No. Unfortunately road access to Lachen is closed and hence Gurudongmar Lake permits are being not being given from 5th April 2026 onwards

3. Are Lachung and Yumthang Valley open for tourists?
Yes, Lachung and Yumthang Valley are open with permits.

4. What permits are required to visit North Sikkim?
All tourists need an Inner Line Permit (ILP), issued only through registered Sikkim travel agencies. Self-arranged travel is not allowed.

5. Can I self-drive to North Sikkim?
No, self-driving is not advisable. Only SUVs with experienced local drivers are allowed due to the terrain and road conditions.

6. Is it safe to travel to North Sikkim now?
Yes, it is safe to visit Lachung and Yumthang Valley, provided you follow daylight travel, hire licensed operators, and comply with district administration guidelines.

7.
