After three months of being closed due to heavy rainfall and multiple landslides, both Lachen and Lachung has officially reopened to tourists starting March 8, 2026. The Sikkim government, in coordination with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), has restored road connectivity up to Lachen. Road from Lachen to Gurudongmar Lake is also accessbile creating fresh opportunities for travelers to once again experience the breathtaking beauty of this Himalayan region.
The Tourism Department, Government of Sikkim has announced revised travel regulations for North Sikkim following difficult terrain conditions and safety concerns.

Sangkhalaing Bridge Completed: The newly constructed bridge at Dzongu has created a stable route to Chungthang and beyond, saving nearly 1.5 hours of travel time compared to the earlier Pihidang route.
Permits Available: Inner line permits for North Sikkim are being issued
Open Destinations: Currently all destinations including Lachen, Gurudongmar Lake, Lachung and Yumthang Valley (up to Zero Point/Yumesamdong) are open for visitors.

Lachung & Yumthang Valley: Open for tourist movement with timing restrictions.

Road clearance efforts are ongoing, and BRO/GREF personnel are stationed with machinery to address blockages.
Recently during the 1st week of March 2026, Taram Chu bridge construction got compeleted and since 8th March 2026 tourist permits are being given so that vehciles can pass through.

Yes Lachen is open to tourists. Visitors can now travel to Lachen and Gurudongmar Lake from 8th March 2026. The Tarum Chu Bridge was completed and inaugurated during first week of March 2026.

Yes Gurudongmar Lake permits are being given from 8th March 2026 onwards
3. Are Lachung and Yumthang Valley open for tourists?
Yes, Lachung and Yumthang Valley are open with permits.
4. What permits are required to visit North Sikkim?
All tourists need an Inner Line Permit (ILP), issued only through registered Sikkim travel agencies. Self-arranged travel is not allowed.
5. Can I self-drive to North Sikkim?
No, self-driving is not advisable. Only SUVs with experienced local drivers are allowed due to the terrain and road conditions.
6. Is it safe to travel to North Sikkim now?
Yes, it is safe to visit Lachung and Yumthang Valley, provided you follow daylight travel, hire licensed operators, and comply with district administration guidelines.
7. Is it compulsory to stay two nights in Lachung? No it is not compulsory to stay two nights in Lachung. North Sikkim permits are however issued for minimum 2 nights, 3 days. Two nights can be in either in Lachen or Lachung or one night each
