North Sikkim Road Condition & Permit Update – September 2025

After three months of being closed due to heavy rainfall and multiple landslides, North Sikkim has officially reopened to tourists starting September 8, 2025. The Sikkim government, in coordination with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), has restored road connectivity up to Lachung and Yumthang Valley, creating fresh opportunities for travelers to once again experience the breathtaking beauty of this Himalayan region.

The Tourism Department, Government of Sikkim has announced revised travel regulations for North Sikkim following difficult terrain conditions and safety concerns.

Key Updates on North Sikkim Tourism

Sangkhalaing Bridge Completed: The newly constructed bridge at Dzongu has created a stable route to Chungthang and beyond, saving nearly 1.5 hours of travel time compared to the earlier Pihidang route.

Permits Available: Inner line permits for North Sikkim are being issued from September 7 noon onwards. Tourists are required to stay for at least 3 days and 2 nights, with night halts at designated locations.

Open Destinations: Currently, only Lachung and Yumthang Valley (up to Zero Point/Yumesamdong) are open for visitors. 

Road Accessibility Update:

Lachen & Gurudongmar Lake: Currently inaccessible due to road damage. Tourist movement to these areas is suspended until further notice.

Lachung & Yumthang Valley: Open for tourist movement with timing restrictions.

Traffic Timing Restrictions

All tourist vehicles moving from Gangtok towards Chungthang (for Lachung/Yumthang) must cross Sankalang Bridge by 1:00 PM. Vehicles will not be allowed beyond this point after the cut-off.

All tourist vehicles moving from Lachung towards Gangtok via Chungthang must cross Toong Check Post (TCP) by 2:00 PM. No vehicle will be allowed to pass after this time.

Advisory to Tourists, Drivers & Operators

  • It is one way movement up from Dzongu to Chungthang and then one way down from Chungthang to Mangan via Naga, Toong.
  • By virtue of this, it is expected that tourists need to stay two nights at Lachung as the timings don't allow for same day Yumthang, Zero point visit and back to Gangtok.
  • Avoid travel after sunset due to difficult terrain and safety risks.
  • Hire only experienced local drivers familiar with the North Sikkim route.
  • Book tours only through registered Sikkim travel operators.
  • In case of emergencies, tourists and drivers must follow instructions of the District Administration.
  • Avoid pressurizing drivers regarding timings.
  • Strictly follow road and permit regulations.
  • Plan for at least 3 days of stay in North Sikkim for a smoother experience.

Road clearance efforts are ongoing, and BRO/GREF personnel are stationed with machinery to address blockages.

Routes to Lachen and Gurudongmar Lake are still inaccessible as of now. According to officials, Lachen may reopen in the next tourist season once roads are fully restored.
